Trouble In The Twin Cities: Two Orchestras In Labor Disputes

The Minnesota Orchestra may go on strike after management proposed to cut musicians' salaries by 28 percent.

For a metro area of only about 3.5 million people, the Twin Cities region is unusual in the way it supports not one, but two world-class orchestras. Now, with looming deficits on the horizon and musicians' contracts at both the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra expiring Sept. 30, the Twin Cities may have two orchestras on strike.

The Music of Paradise in the City of Light: Verve's "Jazz in Paris" Series

Starting back in 2000, or thereabouts, Universal Music France, the French cousin of the current guise of the long-running jazz record label known as Verve, inaugurated a wonderful series of reissued recordings: the "Jazz in Paris" series. These CDs were made available in the States as well as the Continent.

A Piece Of Technology That Makes Listening To Jazz Better

Maybe you remember when you first realized that the rabbit hole of jazz was far, far deeper than you'd possibly imagined. That the same tenor saxophone player on Kind of Blue also made Blue Train and Giant Steps and A Love Supreme and Interstellar Space and dozens of other albums and who knows how many guest appearances, and that that was just what people recorded of John Coltrane. And that all those records involved scores of other contributors, who in turn played with scores of other people over scores of years.

Michael Cerveris and Loose Cattle make their first appearance on Mountain Stage, recorded live at the Keith Albee Theater in Huntington, W.V. A Huntington native, Cerveris worked at the Keith Albee as a young man, popping popcorn for patrons in the theater's basement. Since then, he's gone on to become one of Broadway's most respected vocalists.
