In his 16 years in Congress, Republican Mickey Edwards came to a strong conclusion: Political parties are the "cancer at the heart of our democracy," he tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross.

In his new book, The Parties Versus the People, the former Republican congressman from Oklahoma details how party leaders have too much control over who runs for office, what bills make it to the floor and how lawmakers vote.

Tulsa Delegate Excited about the DNC

As the Democratic National Convention gets under way in North Carolina, a Tulsa delegate is pumped. This is the first convention, as a delegate, for long time Democrat activist and Oklahoma State Senator Judy Eason McIntyre. She is excited to be in Charlotte.

Eason-McIntyre: “I have been working in Oklahoma Democratic politics since 1969 when I was a pup. I am now a senior citizen. This is the first time I have ever been a delegate. It is like Christmas, Halloween, summertime all wrapped together for me.”

Mitt Romney accepted the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nomination tonight and told the nation that if he's elected he will end the four years of "disappointment and division" brought upon America by President Obama.

"I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed," Romney said. "But his promises gave way to disappointment and division. This isn't something we have to accept. Now is the moment when we can do something. With your help we will do something."

Oklahoma Election Board Denies Group Spot on Ballot

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Election Board is denying a state group's attempt to place Libertarian presidential candidates on Oklahoma's November ballot.

Oklahoma Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax  said Wednesday the agency's legal counsel issued a legal memorandum advising against placing the Americans Elect Party's presidential and vice presidential candidates on the ballot.
