Short, OK – 2 survive plane crash in far eastern Oklahoma

SHORT, Okla. (AP) Two people from Arkansas have survived a plane crash just west of the Oklahoma-Arkansas border.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 74-year-old Lawrence D. Harrod of Natural Dam, Ark., was piloting the two-seat plane and that Dustin C. Lane of Natural Dam was a passenger when the plane went down just after 6:35 p.m. yesterday.

The OHP says Harrod suffered minor injuries and Lane wasn't hurt.

Durant, OK – Police puzzle over marijuana on road

DURANT, Okla. (AP) Durant police responding to a call that "shrubs" were on a roadway found about more than 200 high-grade marijuana plants.

Local drug task force supervisor Chuck Carroll said he'd never seen anything quite like the estimated $500,000 worth of marijuana that was tossed on a Bryant County road last Tuesday.

Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa World has released the results of its latest Oklahoma Poll, just ahead of Tuesday's crowded field for mayor of Tulsa.

Winning for the Republicans with 53% of the vote was Dewey Bartlett Junior. His closest competitor was Chris Medlock with 15%. Medlock is the only other candidate, from either party, to reach double digits. 39% however, refused to answer.
For the Democrats the winner was Tom Adelson. He won with 54% of the vote. 21% declined to answer.

Dond Du Lac, WI – Merc union approves wage and concessions

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) The union at Mercury Marine says its workers have approved a contentious package of wage and benefit concessions the boat-engine maker says it needs to keep 850 jobs from moving to Oklahoma.

Russ Krings of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers did not disclose the exact vote following two days of balloting that ended Friday. The company says it accepts the results.

New Orleans, LA – NEW ORLEANS (AP) G.J. Kinne ran for one touchdown and threw for another in his debut as Tulsa quarterback, and the Golden Hurricane defeated Tulane 37-13 in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.

Kinne, who sat out last season after transferring from Texas, passed for 211 yards and rushed for 77.

Oklahoma City, OK – Public Safety Officials urge citizens to drive safely and obey the "Rules of the Road " over the holiday weekend.

"Troopers from across the country will be patrolling roadways targeting speeders, drunk drivers and seat belt violators over the Labor Day holiday weekend", said OHP spokesman Captain Chris West. The effort known as Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) is a nationwide campaign by state police and highway patrol agencies to reduce fatalities during holiday periods.
