Tulsa, OK – Ground is broken later for a new shopping center in North Tulsa. The Shoppes on Peoria, the new 27,000 square foot retail development center will be located in north Tulsa at 1731 N. Peoria Avenue.
It is at the site of the old Seminole Shopping Center, known by developers as the Banfield site, after a long time meat market that was located there.
Tulsa, OK – Today is Kathy Taylor's last full weekday as Tulsa's mayor. Her term in office will end Monday afternoon when Dewey Bartlett takes the oath of office. KWGS' John Durkee, a former member of Taylor's staff, set down for an exit interview with the out-going mayor.
Tulsa, OK – Family members are calling it a miscarriage of justice. 36-year-old Larry Neely was given a 12-year prison sentence for the first degree murder of a 20-month old child left in his care. However, this morning, Judge William Kellough suspended all but 12-years of the prison term. He also gave Neely credit for time already served.
The Judge cited Neely's remorse and said the crime was not convicted by malice. Prosecutors had claimed Neely yanked toddler J.J Hall from a bed and slammed him into a dresser causing fatal internal injuries.
Tulsa, OK – The unemployment rate in the multi-county Tulsa metro took a huge jump in October. In figures, released yesterday afternoon, the local rate jumped to 7.5 %. That is the highest rate in 20-years.
However, when you break out the numbers, the Tulsa County's solo rate also increased but not as much. It was 7.2% for October. John Carpenter with the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission says that shows, at least some of, the adjacent counties to Tulsa saw a much higher unemployment rate increase than Tulsa County.
Tulsa, OK – Tulsa Auditor Phil Wood leaves office on Monday. He is the longest serving city official in Tulsa history having served for over 21-years. He lost his bid for re-election. Correspondent Marshall Stewart visited with Wood at his city hall going away party.
Oklahoma City, OK – For the first time since September, Oklahoma recorded no H-1-N-1 flu deaths last week. State Epidemiologist Doctor Kristi Bradley says this wave seems to be winding down. She says it reached a peak in mid-October and has declined since that time.
She says, however, not to get complacent because pandemics usually come in waves. She expects another wave in late winter and early spring.
Tulsa, OK – An Osage County Sheriff's Deputy was killed over night in a traffic accident. The deputy was responding to an emergency call near Prue when his car ran-off the roadway and overturned several times.
The deputy was thrown from the car and may not have been wearing a seat belt. He was dead at the scene.
The deputy has been identified as 26-year-old Adam Michael Mehagan of Skiatook .
