Tulsa, OK – Oklahoma gets $4 million in federal funds

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says Oklahoma is getting about $4 million in federal economic stimulus money to pay for transit projects.

LaHood made the announcement Friday on the deadline for the Federal Transit Administration to award all of the stimulus money alloted for transit projects.

Tulsa, OK – OSU-Tulsa president now to oversee OSU hospital

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma State University is consolidating the leadership of its Tulsa campus and its Center for Health Sciences in the state's second-largest city.

The OSU-A&M Board of Regents on Thursday gave OSU-Tulsa President Howard Barnett the added responsibility as the president for the Center for Health Sciences.

Twister Bill Passes House

Tulsa, OK – House passes tornado safety bill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma House has passed legislation to protect tenants of mobile home and RV parks from tornados and other natural disasters.

A bill passed Thursday requires the owner of a mobile home or RV park to provide tenants with an evacuation plan in case of a tornado, high winds or flooding. The plan must be developed with the help of emergency planners in the city or county where the park is located.

Over night Fire leaves Tulsans Homeless

Tulsa, OK – A three alarm fire overnight destroys a section of the London Square Apartments at 59th and South Lewis. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

One woman was taken to the hospital and another was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The blaze broke out about 2 a.m. Friday morning.

30-to-40 people were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross will put them up in hotels until the housing can be founding. 12-apartments sustained damage.

Meeting Called Off

Tulsa, OK –
A meeting between the Tulsa School Board and the Tulsa City Council was called off at the last minute this afternoon. The meeting was to have discussed how best to pay for school crossing guards, but the meeting's agenda had not been posted.

Holding the meeting without a posted agenda would have been a violation of Oklahoma's open meetings act.

Tulsa, OK – Okla. not finalist for ed. grant, will reapply

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma is not among the 16 finalists selected for a federal education grant but Gov. Brad Henry says the state will apply again.

Forty states and the District of Columbia applied for a share of the $4.35 billion to be used to implement innovations in public schools.

The U.S. Department of Education announced the finalists Thursday and said half the money will be held for a second round of applications.

Block Grant Funding

The Tulsa City Council is inviting interested Tulsans to express their desires about funding of local programs through Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) which bring federal money into the community to fund programs approved by the Council each year.

A public hearing, giving citizens their opportunity to comment, will be a part of the Thursday, March 11, 2010 City Council Meeting. That meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall at One Technology Center, 175 E. 2nd Street.
